Clint Mathis is returning to New York after a long absence.
The New York Red Bulls signed Clint Mathis as a fourth round pick in the MLS Super Draft of 2008 and a conditional pick for 2009. Clint Mathis played for New York [when it was the Metro Stars] from 2000 to 2003.
During his first period with New York, Mathis scored a five goal wonder against Dallas which included a run of 70 yards. For this, Mathis won the 2001 MLS Goal of the Year.
He left New York for the Bundesliga but returned to America after a difference of opinion with its coach. He also had problems with Bruce Arena during the World Cup in Korea/Japan 2002 for his “work problems”. Mathis had stints with Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids where he was unable to repeat the success he enjoyed earlier.
While Mathis has had 33 goals in 67 games with New York, it is no secret that he was the last choice. New York wanted other players but they were under contract or were taken by other teams.
My advice to the New York Red Bulls is the following:
1. I hope you are doing the right thing.
2. Do not expect miracles because Mathis in 2007 is not the same as 2000-2003.
My advice to Clint Mathis is the following:
1. Please take advantage of this opportunity and prove to New York and the Bruce Arena that you are valuable to them.

How is ‘I hope your doing the right thing’ advice? No, I’m not being rude I’m just wondering.
Mathis was good. Note was. He’s beefed up too much and is too slow for the game anymore. The Redbulls are rubbish this year and were looking for anyone to be a striker with John Wolyinec(sp). They would have signed me if I offered, but I have higher standards.
