West Ham thrash Wigan

West Ham put themselves level on points with Wigan after a 3-0 victory at the JJB and with Charlton losing away to Blackburn and with Fulham having to play Arsenal away tomorrow then this win could be priceless and it could keep them in the premiership.

The game started nervously with both sides knowing a win would do loads for their confidence and it took until 16 minutes for the first shot to come with Emile Heskey firing straight at Robert Green from outside the box however West Ham were looking dangerous and with the pace of Tevez and Boa Morte they were starting to cause problems and Wigan suffered a big blow after 24 minutes when Arjan De Zweeu was forced to come off and Matt Jackson replaced him.

The tempo of the game began to increase after 25 minutes with Emile Heskey heading narrowly wide for the home side after a good cross from Emerson Boyce and Carlos Tevez shot wide from the edge of the box but the away side took the lead a minute later when Lucas Neill’s long ball found Luis Boa Morte and the goalkeeper and he ran for it Boa Morte managed to get a touch which took it over Filan’s net and carried it into the net.

Suddenly Wigan were all over the place and they nearly concede a second minutes later when Tevez finds Boa Morte on the wing and his cross finds Zamora whose shot is deflected into the hands of Filan but West Ham continue to dominate with Tevez skipping past Matt Jackson and firing wide and then the classy Argentine nearly scores when Zamora backheels it to him in the box and his shot takes a deflection and although it sends Filan the wrong way he manages to correct himself in time and grabs it.

Wigan went in at half time a goal down and rightly so and Paul Jewell bought on Paul Scharner for Danny Landzatt but the game seemed to enter a dull period with Paul Jewell throwing making his 3rd substition on 57 minutes by bringing on Julius Aghahowa for Kevin Kilbane but it was West Ham who struck the next blow with Benanyoun showing composure in front of the goal to fire it home and they could have been further behind when Tevez’s shot hit the post and Leighton Baines thumped the rebound from Nigel Reo-Coker off the line.

West Ham made it game, set and match when West Ham exploited Wigan’s empty defence after Wigan went forward to attack to set up a third goal. It was a wonderful play involving 4 of West Ham’s key player The move engineered by Tevez, who provided a superb pass to Reo Cooker, who then provided another pass to Boa Morte, who was in the one on one situation with John Filan. Boa Morte then slotted the ball to Harewood’s path for the forward to blast the ball past Wigan keeper.

Alan Curbishley said after the game “We are still alive. To come here and win 3-0 and play the way we did was great”. They are still alive and although Tevez may have cost them £5.5 million he may yet keep them in the Premiership and after another superb display today the price West Ham just paid might be worth it.
