Home » Euro 2008 » England Expects EURO Entry: Can It Be Done?

A simple looking question in its own right but a question unfamiliar to England fans as they look forward to Wednesdays impending game against Russia. Win, and England will be firmly in the running for a top two position which will automatically assure qualification now the Play Offs have been scrapped.

However, if England lose and the effects could be devastating for the country.

Steve McClaren

The man with all the pressure… and answers.

England have a traditional history of turning up for international events and despite their usual media hyped entrance, subsequent early exit and ridiculously exaggerated excuses with the media and country’s population jabbing a tiring finger at anybody who could remotely look like a scapegoat (Taylor, Neville, Beckham, Seaman, Miers, Ronaldo et al) it seems that maybe it would be for the country’s own good if they missed EURO 2008 if only to re shuffle the squad and bring in a more able manager, but then this is England and although I’m sure most foreigners would laugh at me when I say this but, what is an international tournament without England. Every two years England always have a way for dramatically coming close, losing out by some margin like refereeing decision or the dreaded penalty shoot-out. Now of course the fans behaviour has increased greatly, gone were the days of beer chugging English hooligans wanting to kick lumps of crap from rival fans but now a majority of English fans are well behaved and one of the loudest set of travelling fans world-wide (almost certainly in Europe).

I think England will make the EURO 2008 but it will be tough. Steve McClaren may have bought some much needed breathing space and good press after a decent 3-0 humbling of an Israel side whick lacked creativity (rare for a country which had lost once in their last two qualifying campaigns) and with Russia a test it would be foolish if McClaren changed most of his starting eleven that started Saturday evening.

My perferred (fully fit) England team for EURO 2008 would be:

                                                                                            GK: David James

RB: Micah Richards                                 CB: Rio Ferdinand                 CB: John Terry                     LB: Ashley Cole

RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips                    CM: Steven Gerrard             CM: Owen Hargreaves        LB: Joe Cole

ST: Wayne Rooney               ST: Michael Owen

If you dont win today then you need to beat russia in russia, thats were you shall fail, thats why the pressure tonight may get the better of you

  2. True, the match in Russia would be very tough. We need all three points at Wembley, anything less will be detrimental to our Qualification bid. Sven labelled this group as an easy qualification group before handing the reigns over to McClaren. But to be fair, Croatia, Russia and Israel are in decent form and their mentality are carrying them through the group.

  3. This isn’t what I would describe as an easy group to qualify from. Russia are a well drilled team under Hiddink, Israel are also good and Croatia are good so Sven is speaking rubbish when he said that.

England need the 3 points tonight.

  4. Even if we hadn’t won against Russia last night I would have been confident of our qualification.

Now that we’ve won though, I’m absolutely positve we’ll make it through.
