Bolton went into this as a team that was 2nd bottom in the Barclayds Premiership with a new manager. Gary Megson had been in charge for two games which had both ended in 1-1 draw’s. At home to Aston Villa and away to West Ham. Bayern Munich were top of the Bundesliga but had dropped 4 points in their last two games with two goalless draws.
Bolton made a surprise change for this one dropping their first choice goalkeeper in exchange for Ali Al Habsi while Gary Megson also opted to play 4-5-1 with Kevin Davies leading the line. Diouf and Anelka were unavailable for selection.

First Half
The game began with Bolton playing well and they won a thrown in deep in Bayern Munich teroritory. Captain Kevin Nolan took it and managed to get it in. The ball bounced about for a while and then Ricardo Gardner fired it home with a neat finish. The Bolton fans began to sing in loud voice while the home team were stunned a goal down at home to a team in the relegation zone.

Bayern to be fair responded postively and while they weren’t at their magnificent attacking footballing best they did look dangerous around the box but Bolton were doing well however Franck Ribery looked fantastic on the wing he is dangerous with a lot of pace and he caused me a couple of heart attacks when France played Scotland at home a while ago. We won 1-0 but that’s another story.
However Bayern’s danger turned into a goal when Poldoski passed it to Ribery and he played it back and from just inside the box the German striker finished it. Fantastic goal with great passing and a fantastic finish. There was nothing the goalkeeper could have done about it and it was unlucky for Bolton.

Then Schweinstager went even closer. A neat passing move was nearly complete when his first shot was saved however it came straight back to him and with the goalie on the ground he should have scored however he fired into the side netting it was a poor finish and he should have scored but Bolton survived the rest of the half and they went in at half time level at the Allainz Arena.
Second Half
Bolton began the second half well like they started the first but then they were hit by a sucker punch. Ribery showed why he is World class he charged forward and evaded two challenges before squaring it to Poldoski for a tap in that my gran could have scored with her eyes closed. Good run by Ribery and well Polodoski it could have been easier.

Omarr Hitzfield opted to take off Frank Ribery and that let the game cool down a bit and then Bolton hit them with 10 minutes to go. It was a quick throw in that found Nolan and he managed to tap it to Kevin Davies who fired home from inside the box. It was a fantastic finish from the Bolton striker.
And it could have got better had Stelios managed to stay onside. He took advantage of a Bayern defensive mistake and passed before making a run but strayed marginally offside while Lucio also fired over in the 93rd minute however Gary Megson has proved himself tonight to the Bolton doubters and I wish Bolton luck at the weekend it was a fantastic performance tonight and it was without Anelka and Diouf.

Post-Match Thoughts
A fantastic result from Bolton.
While I think Sammy Lee should have got more time there is no doubt that things have improved. Bolton have got two good results against top 10 teams in the league. Tonight they went to one of the top teams in Europe up against players like Ribery, Toni, Poldoski and Schweinstager. Megson has done a steady job so far and will hope to get his first victory when they take on Middlesbrough at home.
Well done Bolton.
