At a time so long ago that it now seems like another lifetime, I was coaching the Shore Area U-14 Select Team in New Jersey. Our select team of girls, all born in 1972, was entered in a Regional Tournament in Pennsylvania. A week before the tournament, the State Team took 75% of our players for another tournament, requiring us to patch together an assortment of players from area traveling teams.

I met one of the girls the day the tournament started and she actually was born in 1975, had not played much soccer, but was reputed to be a natural athlete. That girl’s name was Christy Pierce (now Rampone) and her natural ability was understated. She played at an even or better level with girls 3 years older. There was no question in my mind that one day I would proudly say I once coached Christy.

We came in second in the tournament, losing our only match in the finals in the 2nd sudden death overtime to a select team from New York.
