News

The race to be the man to replace Alex McLeish has become more interesting with in the last few weeks the head of the SFA Gordon Brown annoucing a four man shortlist for the job. The four men are Mark McGhee, George Burley, Graeme Souness and Tommy Burns. Most people suspect that Mark McGhee is going to become the new Scotland boss but Gordon Smith said “Nobody has been ruled in or out”

The Candiates

Mark McGhee- Mark McGhee has had mixed results in England taking clubs up and down during his time there. However when he took over as Motherwell boss in the summer he inherited a squad of players who had finished 10th the previous year. This year there third in the table and going strong. When Motherwell captain Phil O’Donnell died on the 29th December 2007, McGhee conducted the club very well and named a stand after him. He’s said he “Couldn’t leave without everyone’s blessing” If he is to become the new manager he’ll probably stay at Motherwell to the end of the season.

George Burley- He took Ipswich to 5th place and then the Uefa Cup and he also won 8 out of 10 games with Hearts as manager, With Southampton he took them to the play-offs. He’s considered a people’s manager but people question whether he’s been in charge of a big enough club to manage Scotland. Southampton have given him permission to talk to the SFA about the vacant post.

Tommy Burns- Tommy Burns who works at Celtic has little managerial experience but worked as an assisstant for Berti Vogts and Walter Smith. He resigned when Alex McLeish became manager as he felt he had been treated shabbily. A sentiment agreed by many Scotland fans. With a new head of the SFA he’s been touted again. He knows the Scotland players and the set up and he’s been a brilliant coach but sometimes brilliant coaches don’t make brilliant managers.

Graeme Souness- He’s managed Liverpool, Blackburn, Rangers, Newcastle and Galtasary so could handle the pressure on him. However he’s had mixed spells at these clubs and his last go in management with Newcastle didn’t work out. He’s unlikely to leave like Walter Smith and Alex McLeish would to go to clubs at his age but the question remains will this be one of Souness’s achievements or will it be another Newcastle.
