Agile Alexander Ensures Town Draw

Approaching the fortress that is Portman Road with my merry-making footballing troupè, I duly paid the £18.00 price following our failure to snatch an U16 price ticket which would’ve been half the price, this development also heightened my already lofty expectations of an Ipswich victory at their home ground where we have been unbeaten in the league since March.
With hindsight maybe I should’ve stayed at home following a fustrating goal-less stalemate which saw Town slump to tenth in the league and the fourth 0-0 draw at Portman Road this season.
Preview
Plymouth’s star midfielder, David Norris did not make the Plymouth squad following heavy transfer speculation linking the midfielder to Leicester City, Norwich City, Wolves and most notably, Ipswich Town who already had a fee in the region of £1.5m rejected from the Southern club, yet it seems one drunken fan at the train station insisted that Norris was seen in Ipswich’s town centre signing a contract for the Suffolk club. I’ve heard no latest developments either. Plymouth also fielded their new signing Steve Maclean, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday up front whilst Ipswich’s new signing, Alan Quinn (signed by Sheffield United) also took a place in Town midfield and Alan Lee, once again, was on the bench.
I may note that Alan Lee, and Shane Supple (second choice goalkeeper) kindly signed the shirts adorning our backs before the game (which we got for free by some Ipswich staff) and sadly one friend’s shout of “Get a goal for us Alan” didn’t apply for today’s game.
Match
The game started tit-for-tat with both sides patiently playing down the clock as they tried to break through the defences but the first ten minutes was stopped for two injuries to Ipswich’s Tommy Miller, and the unfortunate linesman who according to previously mentioned drunken fan “fell down a hole” following a push from Danny Haynes (accidental of course).
Then the football, finally started, with a bombardment of Town attacks being blocked valiantly from Plymouth players throwing their bodies in the way of fierce strikes and when Town actually managed to strike the ball at goal, it was Owen Garvan to step up but his curling strike cleared the crossbar.
Thankfully, Ipswich pulled their socks up and despite Town keeper Alexander saving a couple of low troublesome shots, former Spain U21 striker Pablo Counago had two decent efforts but blasted a close range strike over then failed to make a connection to Danny Haynes low dangerous cross. I was kicking the wall in front of me in fustration (we all had front row tickets).
After the interval, Ipswich were once again in free-flowing attacking form and Alex Bruce’s header was cleared off the Plymouth goal-line amongst a player-packed penalty area, and likewise with Jason De Vos’ follow-up which the same player, Halmosi leapt to divert the ball wide. Pity it was our two centre backs and not a striker who would probably put the ball in the net.
Town were thwarted again by Plymouth keeper when McCormick kept out an illustious attempt by Counago as Town never looked like surrendering however they were dealt a heavy blow when Daniel Harding handballed in the Town area and Plymouth were awarded a penalty kick. New signing Maclean stepped up to take and with Town fans in fierce voice (my pitiful attempts to put him off despite the penalty taker being the other side of the pitch) and Neil Alexander pulled of a splendid diving save to deny Macelan a goal on his debut. Cue celebrations which felt as if we had actually scored, and yours truly getting an unwelcome bash on the head (all forgiven).
The last ten minutes was a fustrating affair as the livewire Counago was denied by the woodwork and several Town oppotunities all wasted by inepitude finishing. One mate desperately attempted to liven the atmosphere by passing a ballgirl his phone number written on a crumped piece of paper with the words “I Love You” written on but like Ipswich, he failed to score as she ignored the note completely. So bar the free shirt, stickers and laughs, the £18.00 could’ve been spent on better things but that’s the price to pay when supporting Ipswich Town… and it certainly won’t stop me going again.

If anyone knows a site where I can get free Ipswich Town match reports it would be greatly appreciated as I cannot seem to find any, and my previous source has been shut down. And no it wasn’t illegal.
