Premiership Predictions

May 3, 2008 | Author: Dave-606 | Filed under: World Football

It’s another great weekend in the Premiership as things draw to a close, at the bottom of the league Birmingham or Fulham could be relegated today if they lose and Reading beat Tottenham at home and Bolton beat Sunderland. At the top Arsenal will be mathematically ruled out of the title race if Manchester Utd win at lunch time against West Ham while Aston Villa need to beat Wigan to keep up the push for 5th place. Avram Grant had a fantastic week as Chelsea boss re-opening the title race and progressing to the Champions League final but he’ll need a victory at St James’s Park to keep their title ambition’s going.

Manchester Utd vs West Ham

Man Utd know that two wins over West Ham and Wigan will all but guarantee them the title. They have a big enough goal difference over Chelsea and two victories would mean Chelsea would need to win each game about 14-0 to win the title. Wes Brown was fantastic against Barcelona and I’d expect him to keep his place. Tevez should also enjoy lining up against his former side while fellow striker Wayne Rooney should start on the bench.

West Ham secured Premiership status by winning here on the last day of last season and in the last 3 meetings between the sides West Ham have won all the games but I think Man Utd will win this one.

Prediction: Man Utd 2-0 West Ham

Blackburn vs Derby

On Monday night against Arsenal Derby were defensively torn apart. Going forward they looked half decent but at the back they’re an accident waiting to happen and I think Blackburn will exploit that. Even with Benni McCarthy and Christophe Samba missing the home side should have too much for Derby and Mark Hughes will want to finish as high up the league as possible.

As for Derby they’re missing Alan Stubbs but I think the club just want to get next season under way as they looked like being confirmed as the worst team to ever be in the Premiership.

Prediction: Blackburn 3-0 Derby

Bolton vs Sunderland

Taking 7 points from your last 3 games is not the form of a side who are going to get relegated and I think victory today will make Bolton safe. Gary Megson knows he doesn’t want to have to go to Stamford Bridge on the last day of the season needing his side to get something to stay up. Kevin Davies is back after missing the Spurs game and that will be a big boost for the home side.

Sunderland on the other hand are safe mathematically and Roy Keane will be pleased with how the first season’s gone. Don’t expect to see them roll over though.

Prediction: Bolton 1-0 Sunderland

Reading vs Tottenham

Reading haven’t scored a goal now in 5 games and that’s not the sort of record you want your team to have. They looked ok at the back against Wigan last weekend but they know that they have the easiest game to play on the last day of the season (away to Derby) and that victory here would leave it in their own hands. I think a lot will depend on Leroy Lita and whether he can bang them a few goals.

Tottenham haven’t had a good season and their Carling Cup victory has just papered over the cracks. Ramos won’t be fooled and he’ll be telling his players to win the game. I think they’ll just nick it.

Prediction: Reading 0-1 Tottenham

Fulham vs Birmingham

Fulham’s victory at Man City where they came from two goals down has given them fresh hope but anything other than win today at home to Birmingham and that hope has gone. Kamara who looked fantastic after coming on should start while Jari Litamen is also available but Roy Hodgson knows he needs his defenders at the back to sort themselves out because a defeat today would mean it would be almost impossible to avoid relegation.

Birmingham on the other hand have an awful away record and the fact that they surrendered a two goal lead at home to a weakened Liverpool says it’s all.

Prediction: Fulham 3-2 Birmingham

Aston Villa vs Wigan

Aston Villa know that a victory over Wigan would really put the pressure on Everton as Villa would go into 5th due to their superior goal difference and Everton would have to go to the Emirates. After a poor run of form Villa are back on track and the point at Goodison keeps their hopes of Uefa Cup football next season well and truly alive. This is a big game for the home side.

Steve Bruce has done a good job at Wigan since coming and has made them difficult to beat but he’ll want something here as wins for Birmingham, Bolton and Reading would put Wigan back in trouble.

Prediction: Aston Villa 3-0 Wigan

Middlesbrough vs Portsmouth

Portsmouth haven’t looked themselves recently and it may be due to the fact they’ve reached the FA Cup Final. The players know that even if they fail to get 5th place, victory over Cardiff at Wembley will mean Uefa Cup Football at Fratton Park next season. Portsmouth haven’t won in three games and with little to play for I can see them not turning up again.

Middlesbrough on the other hand know victory would secure their Premiership status and I think Gareth Southgate will get it.

Prediction: Middlesbrough 2-1 Portsmouth

Arsenal vs Everton

Arsenal know that a victory for Man Utd on Sunday rules them out of the title race and I think despite their excellent 6-2 victory over Derby that might demoralize the players ahead of the trip to Everton. Wenger will want us to keep playing brilliant football but Everton have everything to play for and at the end of the day that might just count. I think Everton will be able to sneak a draw at the Emirates.

Prediction: Arsenal 1-1 Everton

Liverpool vs Man City

Manchester City’s decision to get rid of Sven Goran Erikkson is crazy. The fans don’t want him to go and neither do the players he’s done a fantastic job taking the club into the top 10. I don’t think Man City will get anything from Anfield and from a Liverpool side who will be determined to bounce back from their Champions League defeat in midweek but it’s a second consecutive season without a trophy for Benitez and Liverpool.

I also want to see how Elano plays at right back again. Victory for Liverpool.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Man City

Newcastle vs Chelsea

Kevin Keegan has really started to get Newcastle playing again and having Owen play in an attacking midfield role has really worked while Martins and Viduka as well as Owen are chipping in with the goals. Next season I can really see Newcastle pushing for a top 10 finish but they really need to strengthen their defence. Keegan will want his team to attack Chelsea.

Avram Grant will know this is a must win game for Chelsea and I think his team will just snatch the win here which would leave it going to the final day.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Chelsea
