Can Singapore win the 2010 World Cup?

May 6, 2008 | Author: Roberto | Filed under: World Football

I cannot judge whether Singapore has a chance to win the World Cup in the year 2010. I am a believer that every country and society has the potential but we live in a world society where the dreams of people are crushed under the weight of people who want another reality for their children [whether it is out of good or bad intentions]. We promote the Health Care, Legal, and Business Professions over sports including football [soccer] and the end result is those who play football [soccer] make more money than the Health Care, Legal, or Business Professions and they are happy. The people who have had to sacrifice their dreams of playing in sports including football [soccer] to pursue the careers that their parents, relatives, or society at large dictated to them end up losing money and eventually their careers because they are not happy with what they are doing.

Having discussed about the general society and maybe explaining why a society or country may or may not win the World Cup in 2010, the time has come to look at the statistics. According to the web page of FIFA [FIFA.com], Singapore is in the one hundred and twenty ninth ranking with two hundred and thirty seven points as of April 2008. Singapore managed to increase its ranking by two points and its point average by eighteen points from March 2008 to April 2008. In the continental ranking with regards to Asia, Singapore [as of April 2008] ranks twentieth place below the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea [i.e.: North Korea] in nineteenth place and Kyrgyzstan with twenty first place.

At the present time, Singapore is in Group Four of the Asian Qualifiers for the World Cup 2010. Singapore is currently in second place behind Uzbekistan with three points and ahead of Saudi Arabia with its three points. Singapore is also ahead of fourth place Lebanon [which has no points]. [Uzbekistan is currently in first place in Group Four of the Asian Qualifiers for the World Cup 2010. It must be remembered that of the four in this Group, Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia will be difficult to defeat.] There is also another game against Bahrain that Singapore has to play against. Regardless, Singapore has the tenacity to play and attempt to win and does not allow themselves to be disappointed easily. While I do not think that Singapore may classify for 2010, I am convinced in the near future they may surprise the football [soccer] world by classifying in a future World Cup.
