Manchester Utd went into the game knowning victory at Wigan would win them the title. They went into the game level on points with Chelsea but with such a superior goal difference that a United win would do the job. Any slip up at Wigan however could see Chelsea take advantage as they were at home to Bolton. Sir Alex Ferguson started Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez who had contributed 56 goals to the season before the game had started.
As for Wigan they had secured their top flight status with victory at Aston Villa but Steve Bruce said his players would give their all.

First Half
Any conspiracy theories that Wigan would just lie down were destroyed as they bossed United in the opening 10 minutes. Jason Koumas saw a shot fly over the bar as United struggled to cope with Wigan’s large midfield.
Wigan continued to look strong with Heskey having a header pushed over the top by Van Der Sar and Emmerson Boyce nearly scored from a corner while Wigan should have had a penalty after Rio Ferdinand handled in the box. In my view it was a clear penalty and the ref had blown it. However it wouldn’t be long before a penalty was given at the JJB stadium and it went the other one.
Rooney was clipped by Boyce and the ref made the right decision by giving the penalty. Up stepped Ronaldo and he calmly slotted home to give United a valuable lead.

Then there was more controversy as Paul Scholes appeared to push Valencia. The midfielder was already on a yellow card and that surely would be a second yellow card and he’d walk but the ref let him off with a warning. It was the wrong decision and in my view the ref bottled it in a big game he couldn’t do it. Scholes was lucky and away in London Chelsea were cursing their luck.
Second Half
Man Utd heard that Chelsea were currently drawing 0-0 at home to Bolton which meant if they’re scored stayed the same United would only need a draw.
Man Utd looked better after the break and Kirkland did well to save from Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo to keep the title race alive and it looked worse for United as Chelsea’s Shevchenko gave them the lead at home to Bolton. That goal meant United would have to win at the JJB as things stood. Wigan continued to give their all though and it looked like it was going to be a tense finish.
However Ryan Giggs confirmed the title would go to Old Trafford when after coming on as a sub he picked up the ball and fired it past Kirkland. It was his 758th appearence for the side and it equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s appearence record.

That was the end of that and a late goal for Bolton at Stamford Bridge just confirmed the title was Manchester Utd’s. It was their 10th title in 16 years.
Verdict
Wigan 7/10- Wigan deserve credit for putting on a real battling performance. They got stuck in and Steve Bruce has done a really good job in keeping them up this season. They were unlucky with refeering decisions as at 0-0 they should have had a penalty and at 1-0 United Paul Scholes should have been sent off. A good season for Wigan and 14th place isn’t a bad finish.

Man Utd 8/10- They’re a fantastic side and in my view the best in the world. Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo all have amazing skill while at the back Vidic and Rio are solid defenders all over the pitch United ooze quality and they’re one of the most entertaning sides in the world. Sir Alex Ferguson deserves praise for the fantastic job he’s done at United since joining 20 years ago and they must be favorites to win the Champions League in Moscow coming up.
Man of the Match- Ryan Giggs grabbed the key goal and equalled Sir Bobby’s record.
