Aston Villa manager, Martin O’Neill has reassured his desire to “continue to do a job” for Aston Villa ahead of summer talks with club chairman-owner Randy Lerner.
The Villa boss issued a statement on the club’s official website last night to attempt to clarify his position with the club.
The former Celtic boss had been contacting many media outlets stating that there has been no fall-out with American businessman Lerner.
All this followed allegations on different web sources that he had fallen out with the American business man over summer transfer budget. As in the January transfer window he had to adhere by a “sell to buy policy”.
An unamed media source has put on their website “O’Neill has revealed he will hold crucial end-of-season talks with owner Randy Lerner.
And the man rated one of the game’s brightest bosses hinted he is by no means certain to be at Villa at the start of next season.
O’Neill is fed-up with the stick he is getting from a section of fans and will also ask Lernerto spell out exactly what his expectations are and how much will be spent on the team.
And O’Neill, who is approaching four years in charge, looks set to walk if the overall picture is not to his liking and he
feels he has taken the club as far as he can.
”
Martin O’Neill has been quick to deny this claims and has said none of it is true. Although ,O’Neill declined at that conference to give assurances over his long-term future at Villa and said only Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could make such statements given his outstanding record of success.
But he was full of praise for the backing he had received from Lerner in spending £80 million on new players during the past four years.
O’Neill, in his statement on Villa’s website, said: “In light of ongoing and perplexing reports – despite my efforts to bring clarity to the situation earlier today – I would like to reiterate one or two points which, to me, are essential.
“Every summer, since taking this job at Aston Villa in August 2006, I have sat down and discussed the season in general with my chairman, Randy Lerner, attempting also to formulate plans for how we hope to keep improving the club year on year.
“This summer will be no different.”
As regards his future, O’Neill said: “I have a yearly rolling contract and I hope to continue to do a job, the challenges of which I enjoy immensely.”
But at the earleir press conference O’Neill had appeared to admit that he would consider his Villa future at the end of the season.
He said: “People make judgments and calls and things. I will see if the Aston Villa fans are disgruntled with it. I will take it into consideration if the chairman – who will have a big say in proceedings – agrees and, interestingly, I will have a say in proceedings because it is my life.
“I’ll have a look. We will see where we are positioned.
“That is the best time to go and make that assessment. There will be people with a big say in proceedings. I include Villa, the chairman, and myself.
“That’s what I’m saying. It doesn’t need me to keep going and explaining what I have said.
“If I haven’t articulated it well enough to you, then that is where I am going.
“I will sit and assess how things are, that is exactly the case, and if by the end of the season it has turned out pretty well, great, and if it hasn’t turned out well, with seven games to go, I will sit and assess things then, with the chairman, who is my employer. That is what I will do. I will sit down.”
Asked in what respect he will consider his future, O’Neill replied: “With respect to everything.
“With respect to whether we are making the progress that people want to make, whether we are doing everything in our power to get that – assessing everything.
“Where we stand, where the football club stands in relation to the Premier League.”
O’Neill revealed Lerner was the first to contact him when erroneous reports of his departure first broke on Tuesday and said the chairman is delighted with the season so far.
“I heard that we had a fight on Tuesday afternoon!” added O’Neill.
“He was on holiday with his daughter on Tuesday afternoon. He was the first one to call me.
“He was quite surprised to hear I had left the club. He wanted to know who had given the go-ahead!
“He’s delighted with the season. I think, however, he can speak for himself.
“He has even said, when those rumours started surfacing: ‘Shall I say something?’
“He had heard about it from our chief executive Paul Faulkner.
“Certainly this season there has been very little to be disappointed with. We are still trying to qualify for Europe for the third time on the trot which is what he said to me.”
Personally, I feel if O’Neill does decide to leave Villa, Villa will become the same mid table team they was when David O’Leary was at the reins.
