Richardson, who started against Wigan Athletic, performed particularly well at left-back during Sunderland’s narrow 2-1 defeat at the Emirates back in October and caught the eye of Arsene Wenger with his pace and technical ability, comfortably coping with the threat from England winger Theo Walcott.

The former Manchester United player can also play on the left-side of midfield, or as a second striker behind a target man, although both Roy Keane and Steve Bruce have both complained during their time as Sunderland manager that the player does not know what his best position is.
