After witnessing Gerrard dismantle Everton on Tuesday Merseyside derby, Liverpool Defender said that his Anfield team-mate has already shown that it is better to play for his club and deserves more national recognition for their achievements.
Carragher, who was surprised when Gerrard was recently been overlooked for the captaincy of England, was in the performance of his patron astonishment ‘hat-trick against the face of David Moyes.
Carragher said: “we all know that it is in the upper echelons when it comes to players of Liverpool, with the majority that you first or second behind Kenny Dalglish, but when you look at a list of the greats to play in English football would say about him is second only to Bobby Charlton in terms of best midfielders ever has been.”
“It would be to put 1 not Charlton not only for his achievements with Manchester United, but due to the 1966 World Cup.” Apart from that it would have Graeme Souness, Alan Ball, Dave Mackay, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Glenn Hoddle, Gazza, Frank Lampard and Bryan Robson. “For me, Stevie has eclipsed those for what he has done for Liverpool and England.”
Considering how highly he rates of 31 years of age, is that surprising Carragher strongly disagrees with the decision of the interim head coach of England Stuart Pearce did not hand him cuff of the national team.
“He was shocked and surprised by this decision,” said Carragher. “Scott Parker is a great player and everybody respects him, but Steven Gerrard be England captain.” He was captain of the World Cup, it has been one of the best players in his country for 10 years and was not there had to me any debate. “Who is the Manager of England, Gerrard should be captain and he should have been against the Dutch.”
Gerrard derby performance has ignited a debate over whether the midfielder is the best ever wearing the shirt of Liverpool, his manager Dalglish with his captain for the award.
Carragher has no doubt.
“Because of what has been done to the club, believe that he is the best,” said Carragher. “Dalglish, Souness and Ian Rush played together in a great team, but because football is a team game it has been harder for Stevie because he is not always played in great teams.”
“For me, his performance in the 2006 FA Cup final [in which Gerrard scored twice in a thrilling 3-3 draw with West Ham, before winning on penalties] stands out even more than Ian Rush in the FA Cup Final of 1986 [that Liverpool beat their rivals of Merseyside Everton 3-1, with the legend of the Welsh also hitting a double] and has also regularly produced at major events such as the 2005 Champions League final.”
“In his time, it was filled with the best players in Great Britain the first Division, but the Premier League now has many of the best players in the world.” Definitely think that it is a case with Stevie that people will not fully give the good has been until it ceases to reproduce.
“It has been harder for him in many ways because when you spend a career at a club, fans see as a youngster, remembers all the errors which have boosted and, then when you get to the end begins to wonder if you’re the same player already.” Even the big players of Liverpool do not have because not join until later or left before that were completed.
“I know how difficult it can be to make a local kid to live up to expectations, especially for Stevie who has had responsibility for so long.”
“None of the players who have played with him would never have disputes that he is the best in the club, and I hope that none of the executives, either”.
